European Copyright Licensing

European Copyright Licensing Limited (ECL) has been established to allow a simple, affordable and legal solution to the copyright maze for wedding couples wishing to record copyright music during their wedding service, reception or music that is overdubbed at a later stage. ECL is able to licence both individuals and organisations for a range of copyright requirements, one of which is for the recording of copyright music used within a wedding day. The Wedding Video Recording Licence utilises the rights from Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL).

Why a licence is needed...

Whenever music is performed or recorded, copyright is involved. The law requires that permission must be obtained in advance from the copyright owner or a licence obtained from the appropriate licensing body; in this case MCPS and PPL.

Weddings and receptions are no exception. When they are filmed or video-recorded any copyright music used during the event or overdubbed afterwards, whether live or commercial sound recording, is affected by these rights.

Who is the MCPS?

Acting on behalf of its composer and publisher members, MCPS negotiates agreements with those who wish to record music, ensuring the copyright owners are rewarded for the use of their music. It collects and then distributes the "mechanical" royalties which are generated from the recording of music on to many different formats, including CDs, cassettes, videos, audio visual and broadcast material.

Who is PPL?

PPL is a music industry collecting society representing over 3,000 record companies, from the large multinationals to the small independents. It collects licence fees from broadcast and public performance users on behalf of the record companies. This licence fee revenue, after deduction of running costs, is then distributed to its record company members and to performers.
